Google Reviews and AI Answers: Why Reviews Shape What AI Says About You

Google Reviews and AI Answers: Why Reviews Shape What AI Says About You

AI assistants do not form their own opinion of your business. They assemble one from what is publicly written about you, and for local and service businesses the largest body of that text is your reviews. When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews for a reliable physiotherapist in Schwabing or a video agency in Munich, the answer is built from search results, business profiles and the words customers have used to describe you. Reviews are no longer just a star rating. They are the raw material of your AI reputation.

How reviews travel into AI answers

Google states in its own Business Profile help documentation that review count and review score factor into local search ranking. That alone matters, because AI Overviews and Gemini draw on the same index and the same local results. Google has also begun using Gemini to summarise reviews in Maps, so the wording of your reviews, not only the average, is condensed into a few sentences that a prospect reads before ever opening your website.

ChatGPT works differently but arrives at a similar place. When it searches the web, it pulls from search results, directories, review platforms and articles. If the recurring phrases about your business are precise, fast to respond and strong with B2B clients, those phrases have a good chance of reappearing in the answer. If the recurring phrase is slow to reply, that travels too.

What this changes in practice

The text matters more than the stars

A high average built on one word reviews gives an AI almost nothing to work with. A handful of detailed reviews that name the service, the context and the result give it sentences it can reuse. When you ask for a review, ask for substance: what the customer came to you for, what happened, and in which situation they would recommend you.

Your replies are part of the record

Owner replies are public text attached to your profile. A calm, specific reply to a critical review shows how you handle problems, and it adds your own description of what you do to the page. Reply to every review, and mention your services naturally rather than stuffing keywords into a thank you.

Consistency across platforms

AI systems cross check. If your Google profile says one thing, your website another and an industry directory a third, the model has less confidence in any of them. Keep name, address, categories and service descriptions identical everywhere. The wider mechanics are covered in our explainer on generative engine optimization.

A review routine that feeds AI search

  • Ask at the right moment. Directly after a delivered result, not weeks later when the feeling has faded.
  • Make it effortless. A short link or QR code to your Google review form, sent personally, not hidden in a newsletter footer.
  • Prompt for detail, never for wording. You can ask customers to mention what the project was about. You should not script reviews, reward positive ones or write them yourself. Google's policies prohibit it and in Germany fake or bought reviews are also a competition law issue.
  • Keep a steady rhythm. A constant flow reads as an active business. A burst of reviews in one week followed by months of silence reads as a campaign.
  • Check what AI actually says. Every few months, ask ChatGPT and Gemini how they describe your business and compare it with your reviews. Our guide to checking your AI visibility shows how.

What reviews cannot do alone

Reviews confirm, they rarely introduce. An AI still needs to understand what you offer from your website, your profile categories and mentions elsewhere. Reviews are the proof layer on top. Businesses with a clear positioning and a steady stream of specific reviews tend to be described accurately. Businesses with neither are described vaguely, or not at all.
