Why Tagging Other Accounts Works Best When You Are Small

Why Tagging Other Accounts Works Best When You Are Small

Mentions work, and they work hardest when you have the least to lose. For accounts under 2,000 followers, including at least one mention lifted reach by 108 percent. For accounts over a million, the reach effect all but disappears.

The numbers

Reach lift from including a mention: under 2,000 followers plus 108 percent, 2,000 to 10,000 plus 37 percent, 10,000 to 100,000 plus 31 percent, 100,000 to 1 million plus 9 percent. Comment lift runs even higher in the middle tiers: plus 174 percent for accounts between 2,000 and 10,000, and plus 166 percent between 10,000 and 100,000, against plus 4 percent above a million. Why the effect fades

A mention borrows an audience. When a small account tags a larger one, it gains access to attention it could not reach alone. When a very large account tags someone, there is rarely a bigger audience to borrow, so the mechanic has nothing left to give. This is one of the few advantages in social media that genuinely favours the underdog, and it expires as you grow.

How to do it without being a nuisance

  • Mention people who are actually in the post: a client, a collaborator, a supplier, a venue. The tag should be a fact, not a tactic.
  • Credit their work specifically. People respond to being seen accurately, not just being tagged.
  • One or two, not ten.
  • Tell them before you post. A message beforehand roughly doubles the chance they interact.
