If your goal is reach beyond your existing followers, shares are the signal that matters most. Instagram head Adam Mosseri has repeatedly named three signals as the most important for ranking: watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach. Of these, he has described sends, meaning people sharing your post via direct message, as the strongest indicator for showing content to people who do not follow you yet. Saves and comments still count, but they do a different job.
A like costs one tap and says almost nothing. A send means someone took your post, thought of a specific person and put their own reputation behind it in a private conversation. That is a strong judgement about relevance, and it is exactly the judgement Instagram needs before it shows your content to strangers. The metric is measured relative to reach, so it is not about absolute numbers. A small account whose posts get forwarded often can outperform a large account whose posts are only scrolled past.
Shareable content usually has a recipient built in. Before you publish, ask: who would someone forward this to, and why? Formats that tend to travel well:
Do not optimise one post for all three signals. A dense carousel with a process is a save object, see our analysis of carousels versus single images. A post with an open question and a clear prompt is a comment object, and asking directly still works, as we described in why asking for comments and saves pays off. A short, sharp Reel with a recognisable moment is a send object. Mix them in your plan instead of hoping every post does everything.
Instagram Insights shows shares, saves and comments per post. Divide each by the post's reach to compare posts of different size fairly. Look at the ten posts with the highest share rate over the last few months and ask what they have in common: topic, opening, format. That pattern is your brief for the next month.
At FADETOBLACK in Munich we build content plans around these signals, so every post has a clear job rather than a vague hope for reach. If you want to know which of your formats already earn shares, let us look at your account together.
