Instagram or TikTok: Where Each Format Actually Wins

Instagram or TikTok: Where Each Format Actually Wins

It depends entirely on the format, and the gap runs in both directions. TikTok still leads on vertical video, where Instagram Reels get about 29 percent fewer views and 14 percent fewer interactions. But on carousels the pattern reverses hard: Instagram carousels get roughly 4.7 times more views and 5.8 times more interactions than the same format on TikTok.

The numbers

Vertical video, average per post:

  • TikTok: 32,895 views, 25,654 reach, 1,207 interactions.
  • Instagram Reels: 23,074 views, 14,919 reach, 1,035 interactions.

Carousels, average per post:

  • TikTok: 5,890 views, 4,391 reach, 154 interactions.
  • Instagram: 27,797 views, 11,573 reach, 897 interactions.

What the gap tells you

Each platform distributes what it was built for. TikTok's entire architecture is a video recommendation engine, and it pushes video to strangers more aggressively than anything else on the internet. Instagram's carousel mechanic, where posts are re served to people who did not engage the first time, has no real equivalent on TikTok.

So the question is not which platform is better. It is which format your business actually needs, and then which platform serves that format.

Choosing without spreading yourself thin

  • If your value is visual and immediate, a product, a place, a performance, video is your format and TikTok will distribute it further.
  • If your value is explanatory, a process, a comparison, a framework, carousels are your format and Instagram is where they work.
  • If you sell to businesses, the conversation is on LinkedIn regardless of what these two do better.

On cross posting

Be careful. Instagram down ranks content carrying another platform's watermark, and recycled cross platform content is explicitly deprioritised. Export clean and adapt the opening seconds to the platform you are posting on.
