Around 8.93 percent of Instagram accounts grew enough to move up a size tier in 2026, and the overwhelming majority of them were small. Roughly 10 percent of accounts under 2,000 followers moved up, and 11 percent of those between 2,000 and 10,000. Above 10,000 that falls to 3 percent, and above 100,000 to 1 percent.
Across platforms, only TikTok grew accounts faster. Instagram sits ahead of LinkedIn, YouTube, Facebook and X. Source: Metricool Instagram Study 2026.
Two things are true at once. Growth is genuinely hard, and it is meaningfully easier while you are small. That is the opposite of how most founders experience it, because the early months feel like shouting into nothing.
Part of the effect is arithmetic. Moving from 1,500 to 2,000 followers requires 500 people. Moving from 80,000 to 100,000 requires 20,000. The percentages measure crossing a line, and the lines get further apart.
Conversations. A founder with 1,200 followers and eight genuine client conversations a month has a working channel. A founder with 40,000 followers and none has an audience, which is a different thing and pays differently.
Followers stopped being a useful proxy once reach decoupled from follower count. Measure what happens after someone sees you, not how many people could theoretically see you.
