Younger audiences search on TikTok because it answers questions the way they want them answered: by a real person, in a short video, showing the thing instead of describing it. Where to eat, how a product looks in use, which agency someone actually worked with, whether a service is worth it. For businesses this means TikTok is no longer only a reach channel. It is a search channel, and videos can be optimised to be found just like web pages.
The shift was acknowledged by Google itself. In 2022 Google's senior vice president Prabhakar Raghavan said that, according to Google's internal research, almost 40 percent of young people looking for a place to eat no longer start on Google Maps or Search but on TikTok or Instagram. Since then TikTok has built search out deliberately, with a prominent search bar, suggested searches under videos and comments that point viewers to related queries.
The reason is trust. A text result tells you a restaurant is good. A video shows you the plate, the room and the face of the person who ate there. For experiential decisions such as food, travel, fashion, beauty or local services, that feels more honest than a ranked list of websites, even when it is just as curated.
TikTok does not only read your caption. It works with the spoken words, the text on screen, the caption, the hashtags and the way people engage after a search. That gives you four places to make a video findable, and most brands use only one of them.
Start in the TikTok search bar. Type the beginning of a question your customers ask and look at the autocomplete suggestions. Open the results and check the related searches that appear above them and the suggested searches under popular videos. Read the comments, because people ask the follow up questions there that nobody has answered yet. Collect these phrases in a simple list, group them by intent and plan one video per question.
Your own sales conversations are the second source. The questions you answer on every first call are almost always searched by people who have not found you yet.
Search viewers are in a different mood than feed viewers. They want an answer, so get to it quickly and skip long intros. Series work well: if one video answers what a brand shoot involves, the next answers how to prepare for it, and the one after that what happens with the material. Each video can rank on its own, and together they build the impression that you are the person to ask.
TikTok and Instagram reward different formats, which we compared in Instagram or TikTok. And because AI assistants increasingly draw on video platforms too, the same question led videos can support your visibility beyond TikTok, a mechanism we describe for YouTube and AI search.
Less than for consumer brands, but more than many assume. Founders, young professionals and junior decision makers use TikTok to research tools, careers, employers and service providers. If your audience is under 35, or your future hires are, being findable there is worth a small, focused series rather than a full channel strategy.
