Stories did not decline. They changed job. Reach is down about 2 percent, which looks like stagnation, but replies rose 88 percent and exits fell more than 6 percent across every account size. Fewer people are watching, and the ones who do are engaging roughly twice as much. Stories stopped being a reach format and became a relationship one.

An exit tells Instagram that someone left your Story rather than continuing. When exits fall, the algorithm reads your content as holding attention, and holding attention is what it distributes.
Stories also rank on closeness signals: direct message frequency, replies, regular viewing. Every reply strengthens the connection that decides whether that person sees you tomorrow. Which is why a reply is worth more than a view. It is not just engagement, it is a vote that changes your future distribution to that individual.
For a considered purchase, one direct message conversation is worth more than a hundred passive views. Stories are the only format on Instagram whose native outcome is a private conversation. If your sales process involves talking to people, that makes Stories the most commercially relevant format on the platform, whatever the reach numbers say.
Post five Stories with one question in the middle of the sequence. Reply personally to everyone who answers. Count how many turn into a real conversation.
